چکیده

A novel setup for investigations in cavity quantum electrodynamics is described, which combines an optical microcavity Ž 5. 85 finesse 4.3=10 with an atomic Rb fountain, allowing full control over density and velocity of atoms entering the optical cavity. To demonstrate this point we study the temporal width of the transmission drops if slow single atoms pass through the cavity. We observe absorptive and dispersive single atom signals in the cavity transmission in real time. q 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 32.80.–t; 32.80.Pj; 42.65.Pc

Real-time detection of individual atoms falling through a high-finesse optical cavity.

The enhanced coupling between atoms and photons inside a high-finesse optical cavity provides a novel basis for optical measurements that continuously monitor atomic degrees of freedom. We describe an experiment in which cavity quantum-electrodynamic effects are utilized for real-time detection of individual atoms falling through an optical cavity after being dropped from a magneto-optical trap...

Collective atomic motion in an optical lattice formed inside a high finesse cavity.

We report on collective nonlinear dynamics in an optical lattice formed inside a high finesse ring cavity in a so far unexplored regime, where the light shift per photon times the number of trapped atoms exceeds the cavity resonance linewidth. We observe bistability and self-induced squeezing oscillations resulting from the retroaction of the atoms upon the optical potential wells. We can well ...

Microphotonics Playing with Atoms

T he scalable manipulation and optical addressing of atomic systems is at the heart of many proposed schemes for quantum communication and quantum information processing1,2. In such systems, quantum information is stored in the states of individual atoms and ions, or within macroscopic atomic ensembles and vapours. Photons prepare atomic states, mediate atomic interactions, and act as ‘flying q...

Quantum jumps and spin dynamics of interacting atoms in a strongly coupled atom-cavity system.

We experimentally investigate the spin dynamics of one and two neutral atoms strongly coupled to a high finesse optical cavity. We observe quantum jumps between hyperfine ground states of a single atom. The interaction-induced normal-mode splitting of the atom-cavity system is measured via the atomic excitation. Moreover, we observe the mutual influence of two atoms simultaneously coupled to th...

Deterministic loading of individual atoms to a high-finesse optical cavity.

Individual laser-cooled atoms are delivered on demand from a single atom magneto-optic trap to a high-finesse optical cavity using an atom conveyor. Strong coupling of the atom with the cavity field allows simultaneous cooling and detection of individual atoms for time scales exceeding 15 s. The single atom scatter rate is studied as a function of probe-cavity detuning and probe Rabi frequency,...
